In support of Palm Beach State College’s mission, the mission of the Art Department is to provide a broad fine arts education emphasizing the technical, artistic, and interpersonal skills necessary for employment and/or personal growth by offering a comprehensive curriculum which nurtures an appreciation of art through exposure to a variety of media and styles of art as well as exhibitions and mentoring under the direction of a recognized, knowledgeable, and experienced faculty and staff.
In 1953, Palm Beach Junior College’s first art classes were offered at the Lake Worth campus. These first credit art courses were held at the Norton Gallery of Art, due to a lack of studio space. From this meager beginning until the present the Art Department witnessed a growth. In 1971, the Boca Raton location started offering Art Appreciation courses at Florida Atlantic University and soon began offering a full compliment of courses to include photography, drawing, painting and ceramics. The interest in the arts spread to the Palm Beach Gardens Campus through the general elective offering of Art Appreciation and later the full compliment of art and photography classes.
Over the course of the department’s growth partners such as the J. Patrick Lannan
Foundation provided gifts of the art works to the college. The large white marble
sculptures in front of the Lake Worth LLRC represent one such gift. Palm Beach State
College also has fostered the growth and development of the now internationally known
Palm Beach Photographic Workshops. College supporters have endowed The Gallery at
Lake Worth Campus. Others have helped to endow art scholarships. Today, the community
and students can appreciate the skill and craftsmanship of professional, faculty and
student artists by visiting the Eissey Campus Gallery and the Gallery at Lake Worth
Campus or the Student Permanent Collection galleries on the college’s website.
The Palm Beach State Art Department offers a wide range of scholarships for students. These scholarships are awarded based on a portfolio review.
Some students prefer to work on campus through the work study or student assistant
programs. To qualify for these programs the process begins by completing the Free
Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). On question No. 28 of the FAFSA indicate your interest in part-time employment as
part of your financial assistance.
Q. Do you need studio art experience to take a studio course?
A. No. Introductory level courses are designed to accommodate students with a broad range of experience.
Q. What can I do with studio art experience upon graduation?
A. Our program asks students to think critically and to synthesize ideas and materials creatively; these skills are invaluable in most aspects of life. Many of our majors and minors further their academic career and go on to become professional artists, teachers, museum curators, art critic, art buyer, art therapy, art restoration, art gallery owners and art exhibitors.
Q. Am I required to present a portfolio before admission?
A. No, you will not be required to prepare a portfolio in order to enroll. The Studio Art Department has an 'open door' policy, welcoming any student who has an interest in the Studio Arts. Individual professors may be interested in seeing some of your previous work. A portfolio review will not affect a student's potential for admission to the College.
Q. Will there be opportunities to show my work?
A. The student gallery located on the first floor of the Humanities building regularly features student works. This gallery provides good exposure for our students as well as community based new and emerging artists.
Q. Can I use the studio if I am not enrolled in a studio class?
A. Only students currently enrolled in studio classes enjoy the privileges of using the facility.
Q. Can I enter the Program if I have a B.F.A. or M.F.A.?
A. Yes you can!
Q. What are some of the classes offered?
A. We offer ceramics, three-dimensional design, color design, painting, life drawing, figure painting and photography.
Q. Will I get transfer credits for my work in another program?
A. Yes. There is a transfer credit evaluation in place.
Q. What is the usual length of time to degree?
A. To receive an Associates in Arts degree takes 2 years.
