Director's Perspective

Upward Bound takes its work seriously in closing the achievement gap for low-income, first generation and disabled students, and significantly make gains in high school graduation rates.

We work as a bridge over troubled waters and extend our services and life preservers to those who need it by providing the supplemental, academic instructions in core subject areas, as well as coaching, and counseling. We also provide test prep tutoring in FCAT and SAT/ACT.

As we all know, education is very important and getting a good solid foundation while in high school will increase one’s chances of succeeding in College and beyond. I like what Grayson Kirk once said, “The most important function of education at any level is to develop the personality of the individual and the significance of his life to himself and to others. This is the basic architecture of a life; the rest is ornamentation and decoration of the structure.”

So, we work on helping the student to build his or her structure academically, socially and culturally by taking students on college, cultural, and educational tours. Our aim is to ensure that all Upward Bound Students whom we work with receive the educational services they need so they can eventually enroll into a college of their choice and succeed.

Once a student enrolls in Higher Education, our sister programs such as Student Support Services and McNair Programs assist the students to stay in college and graduate, and to move on through advanced degrees.

Upward Bound has a serious mission: It’s YOU – the student. So, we encourage parents to help us work with your child in ensuring that he or she receives the assistance needed. I heard a teacher once say, “Students do not grow in the atmosphere of rejection, but in the soil of acceptance." Thus, we accept our students where they are… and we help move them from where they are to where they need to be.
