College Prep Advising Guidelines - July 2009

Message from Dr. Sharon A. Sass, Vice President of Academic Affairs

Students who place in college preparatory classes present a special challenge to Palm Beach State faculty and staff in the pursuit of student success. Research conducted by the state of Florida indicates that college prep students have lower success rates than students who enroll in the college not needing college prep (http://www.fldoe.org/cc/OSAS/Evaluations/Word/bridging_the_gap.doc). This becomes especially serious for our students who test into all three areas of college prep; research shows that these students have about a 6% chance of earning an award within 6 years of enrolling. Also, a recent study released by OPPAGA, a state of Florida government analysis agency, shows that over half of students who enter college prep classes never complete their college prep curriculum (http://www.oppaga.state.fl.us/reports/educ/r07-31s.html).

To help advise students, the College Prep cluster, under the leadership of Associate Dean Susan Bierster, has developed advising guidelines to help academic advisors, faculty and staff choose courses for college prep students that will help them be successful in their first semester.

The advising guidelines documents that you may download below contain valuable information on helping college prep students select courses. The emphasis in these guidelines is that students required to be in college prep courses should begin such courses in their first semester. The reasoning behind such guidelines is to help students be successful and be retained. Allowing students to be overloaded with classes or to be enrolled in classes in which they do not have the skills to be successful benefits no one. Our main goal is increasing student success.

These documents have been updated with guidelines on waiving the SLS requirement in very limited situations.
