School-Age Professional Certificate (SAPC)

Program Objective Code: 5373

The Department of Education School Age Professional Certificate (SAPC) program prepares the student who works with children 5 years and up (through grade 12) in a licensed afterschool program. The program includes the State mandated introductory certification training, 80 hours of SAPC (Palm Beach County Afterschool Educator Certificate) coursework, 480 hours of work experience and on-site observation in an afterschool setting.

Program Description
The student will successfully complete 80 hours of formal classroom instruction in the six competency goals, a 2-hour observation during Module 2, document 480 hours of work experience with school-age children and complete all other Palm Beach State College requirements. Upon completion of the program the student will be awarded a Department of Education School Age Professional Certificate (SAPC).

Mandatory Information Session (choose ONE session)

For the most current and complete information about entering the SAPC program, attend the information session being held at Palm Beach State College.  Attendance is mandatory in order to enroll in the SAPC class.  The session will cover the requirements, module sequence, Prime Time Palm Beach County, Inc. scholarship information and more.  There is no cost for the session.

Please bring your DCF Transcript with you to the Info Session showing you have obtained these certificates:

  • 40 Hour Introductory Child Care Training Certification (birth-5) including 10 Hr School-Age DAP
                                                                             OR
  • 40 Hour School-Age Certification Part I and Part II: Foundations of Advancing Youth Development Principles

NOTE: Students will need to bring a hard copy of their AYD Certificate since it does not appear on the DCF Training transcript.

Also, please be sure you have changed, or added, Program Objective Code: 5373 prior to attending the Info Session. Please see prerequiste requirements below.


Admission Requirements
These requirements must be met before registering for the SAPC program.

Prerequisites:

• 40 Hour School- Age Certificate or 40-Hour Child Care Training (birth-5) including the 10-Hour DAP in School-Age
• 10-Hour DAP in School-Age (if not included in original 40-hour certification)
• Must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent
Employed in a licensed childcare setting or afterschool program caring for school-age children 5-12 years old
• Must be at least 18 years of age
• Mastery of the English language

An official high school diploma or GED transcript must be on file at the Registrar's Office. The transcript must show that the student graduated with a standard diploma from an accredited high school accepted by Palm Beach State College. The transcript must be received and accepted by the registrar before registering for Module 1. 

Change Program Objective Code to 5373  To make this change complete the POC change form and return to the Registrar's Office where you will be attending class. If you are faxing the form, it is always a good idea to follow up by phone to make sure that it was received.

The following requirements must be completed by the end of Module II for students to be eligible to obtain a School Age Professional Certificate.

     • 480 hours documented work experience working with children ages 5 -12 years old in a licensed
     
  child care setting or afterschool program. All 480 hours must be completed within the past 5 years
       and 80 of these hours must be completed while enrolled in the training program. Proof of
       the 480 hours of work experience must be notarized and documented on the Practical Experience
       Summary form.

Completion Requirements
Students must successfully pass both SAPC modules with a passing grade of A, B, or C and complete all additional reqirements for each of the modules in order to be eligible to continue in the program.. Once the student has successfully passed each module, a Department of Education School Age Professional Certificate (SAPC) will be awarded.

Career Path Notes
The student who has earned a Department of Education SAPC Certificate, completed 15 college credits at Palm Beach State College towards their degree and has a program objective code of 2374 (Associate in Science Degree: Human Services - Youth Development Concentration), will be eligible for articulation into 3 college credits upon request. The credits will be for the following course: HUS1620-Principles and Best Practices in Afterschool Programs.
