National Science Foundation Scholars Program

For women and minorities majoring in science, technology, engineering or math

Are you a high school senior planning to pursue a college degree in science, technology, engineering or mathematics?

You could be among a group of academically talented students chosen for the National Science Foundation Scholars Program at Palm Beach State College.

The program is available through funding from the National Science Foundation and a partnership between Palm Beach State and Florida Atlantic University. Participants will receive scholarships to cover the full cost of their tuition, fees and books for four years.

This may be just the stimulus you need to pursue a career in some of the most cutting edge fields requiring individuals with strong backgrounds in math and science. As a National Science Foundation Scholar, you can focus on your academics rather than on finding money for school.

How it works.... 2+2

National Science Foundation Scholars will begin their courses at Palm Beach State in fall 2010. After completing the two-year Associate in Arts degree with an emphasis on math and science courses, you can transfer to Florida Atlantic University to complete your bachelor's degree in science, technology, engineering or mathematics fields in the College of Engineering and Computer Science or Charles E. Schmidt College of Science. Scholarship recipients must attend school full-time, taking at least 12 credits per term to be eligible.

Mentoring and Support

In addition to a full ride through college, students will receive mentoring and support and close academic advising to help ensure their success. We will provide online chat sessions, student success seminars, and access to math tutors. You also can participate in amazing learning opportunities available through Palm Beach State's Math & Science Summer Institute, including experiments and more. Also, joining the Palm Beach State Math Team can enhance your problem solving skills.

Internships

As a National Science Foundation Scholar you also may have an opportunity to receive internships at local biotechnology, physics, aerospace, engineering and environmental science companies. Through internships you can gain valuable training and experience in your field while in college, and when you graduate you'll be ahead of the rest.

Who is eligible?

There are only a limited number of scholarships. Each applicant must:

• have a minimum 3.2 high school/college grade point average

• be a high school graduate

• be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, national or refugee

• have a minimum of one year remaining at Palm Beach State College

• demonstrate financial need

• meet academic requirements for a math, science, engineering or mathematics program area

• meet pre-requisite requirements for mathematics courses

• complete NSF Admissions Questionnaire that includes a personal statement and a statement of commitment to register for at least 12 credits per term while a National Science Foundation Scholar

• commit to meeting regularly with the program advisor and participating in science, engineering and mathematics activities

• agree to respond to surveys to determine employment or student status following graduation
