What is S.W.E.R?
Students Working for Equal Rights (SWER) is a grassroots student movement. The Palm Beach State College chapter is a college club that abides by the rules and procedures of the college student activities office and is a separate entity from the state organization. The statewide SWER organization is open to groups active in cities and towns all over Florida, from Homestead to Tallahassee.
Who can join?
The Palm Beach State College SWER is open only to currently enrolled students at PBSC. The State SWER is open to a wide audience whether it be an overachieving high school student who sees beyond simple community service, or an individual struggling to fulfill a post secondary education to go after his/her dreams ,
Why was S.W.E.R .started?
SWER was created by a handful of individuals from the Florida Immigrant Coalition (FLIC) in February of 2005 in response to an evident need for youth to be involved in the fight for comprehensive immigration reform. FLIC realized that youth voices were not being heard and that youth power was unorganized and scattered. So, this handful of individuals set out on a campaign to tap into the limitless power of youth leadership in the Immigrant Rights. Our campus club was created by students from the ASPIRA club who wanted to support the state wide movement.
S.W.E.R's Mission
SWER is a student-led movement grounded on grassroots organizing that seeks to bring about equal rights and opportunities for all, including youth, immigrants, and the oppressed. We work for access to education, civic engagement, and leadership development for direct action on social issues. We unite under the premises of equality, human rights, and the conviction that no movement can succeed without youth power!
