The mission of the Palm Beach State Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program is to prepare competent entry-level general sonographers in the cognitive (Knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains.
PROGRAM GOALS
To develop a diagnostic medical sonographer who will

Apply the principles and theories of ultrasound physics, as well as the appropriate mathematical and algebraic functions to the practice of obtaining high quality, diagnostic sonograms.

Attain minimum proficiency in positioning and scanning patients and properly setting system gain controls for the sonographic examinations used within the specialty of Abdominal and OB/GYN sonography.

Anticipate and provide basic patient care and comfort.

Recognize emergency patient conditions, initate first aid, and basic life support procedures.

Attain proficiency in the correct use of all technical and medical terms which are necessary for a complete discussion of sonographic procedures

Develop proficiency in obtaining the clinical history from the patient or the patient’s chart and then develop a preliminary differential diagnosis

Demonstrate proficiency in recognizing normal vs. abnormal sonographic patterns.

Demonstrate proficiency in recognizing normal vs. abnormal obstetric and gynecologic sonographic patterns.

Demonstrate proficiency in determining whether a sonographic examination is of high quality, and how to improve the quality if it is not.

Demonstrate proficiency in recognizing technical errors and artifacts, and to correct these errors.

Maintain the ethical and profession values outlined in the SDMS Code of Ethics.
