Meet the CTLE Staff


Matt Klauza                                                                                                                                Faculty Developer, Lake Worth Campus

Matt has been teaching since 2000.  His education includes a B.A. in English Education with a teaching certificate in English and Environmental Science, an M.A. in English, a Ph.D. in English, and 36 graduate-level credit hours (and counting) in pedagogical theory and practice beyond these degrees.  He has been a faculty developer at PBSC since 2016 and was Lake Worth Campus’s Professional Teaching and Learning Chair from 2014-2016. 

Matt’s passion lies in helping faculty try new methods that maximize their students’ success. His areas of focus are 21st century educational methodology, the student experience, and the management of an engaging classroom.

Sonya Rawlins                                                                                                        Associate Administrative Assistant, Lake Worth Campus

Sonya is currently working as the Associate Administrative Assistant for the Center of Teaching and Learning Excellence as well as assisting the Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Holly Bennett, with the continuing contract process.

She joined Palm Beach State College in 2018 as an Administrative Assistant after over 8 years of working in higher education.

Ira Rosenthal                                                                                                              Faculty Developer, Palm Beach Gardens Campus

Ira has both a B.S. and an M.S. in Mathematics, and an Ed.S in Educational Leadership.  She is passionate about life-long learning, and continues to take classes from Coursera and edX every year.  She has been teaching at PBSC for over 20 years in both face-to-face and online formats.  Previously, she served as a department chair, Math Team coach, faculty mentor for Science Path, and co-PI of the NSF grant InnovATE.  She has been an active member of the Professional Development Committee since its inception.

Some of her educational interests are flipped learning, developing problem solving skills, and effective use of technology in helping students become self-directed learners.  Ira enjoys working with the talented PBSC faculty to support them in their endeavors of increasing student success, and providing innovative, engaging learning experiences for all students.

Carrie Thompson                                                                                                    CTLE Liaison, Belle Glade & Loxahatchee Groves Campuses

Carrie has been teaching at Palm Beach State since 2011 and has been full-time faculty since 2017.  From 2008 to 2016, she held various positions in the Student Learning Center. Her education includes a Master of Education and an additional 21 graduate-level credits in English Literature.  She served as the Professional Teaching and Learning Center (PTLC) liaison for Belle Glade and Loxahatchee Groves campuses in 2018, and prior to this position, she served on the PTLC campus committee, often helping to facilitate and coordinate professional development for instructional faculty.

Carrie thrives in a dynamic environment and believes that faculty should actively and hungrily pursue new knowledge and learning opportunities. Self-reflection and life-long learning are essential to not only faculty success, but also student success.

Helena Zacharis
CTLE Liaison, Boca Raton Campus

Helena’s passion for developmental education and its importance in student success has been the focus of her career at Palm Beach State College, where she has worked for more than 14 years.

She is a professor of College Readiness and EAP at the Boca Raton campus, where she focuses on instructing preparatory and non-native students in writing, grammar, and critical reading. Prior to Helena’s position as full-time faculty, she held positions in the Student Learning Center as the Manager at the Palm Beach Gardens campus as well as the Reading Learning Specialist at the Boca Raton campus. 

She is trained with the College Reading and Learning Association and is a member of the National College Learning Center Association, the Association of Florida Colleges, and represents PBSC as a board member for the Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Communication and a master’s degree in Multi-Disciplinary Studies.

Africa Fine                                                                                                                                Continuing Contract Coach, Boca Raton Campus

Africa has taught composition and literature at the Boca Raton Campus for 19 years (4 as an adjunct; 15 as full-time faculty). She also has more than 20 years of college teaching and professional writing experience. Africa earned a M.A. in English Literature (concentration in Multicultural Literacies) from Florida Atlantic University and bachelor’s degrees from Duke University in Public Policy and African American Studies. She has also published 5 novels.

Africa has served on the college-wide continuing contract committee twice, and is committed to retaining our best and brightest PBSC faculty.

Robin Fiedler

Continuing Contract Coach, Palm Beach Gardens Campus

Robin has been teaching in higher education since 1997. Previously, she taught in corporate settings, such as safety training, employee benefits, and community management.  Her education includes a B.F.A. in Theatre, B.A. in English Literature, and M.A. in English with a focus on Dramatic Literature. She has taught at Florida Atlantic University, American University in Cairo, Zayed University in the UAE, Santa Monica College, Pasadena City College, and Cal State LA in California. She returned to Palm Beach State College in 2008 as an adjunct and was accepted for continuing contract in 2012. She served at English Cluster Chair 2013-2014, PTLC Chair for the Eissey campus 2015-2017, and is currently serving as a Continuing Contract Coach for the Eissey campus. 

Other service includes the Honors Advisory Council and faculty adviser for Sabiduria, the Dr. Floyd F. Koch Honors College Interdisciplinary Academic Journal publication, and College Wide Program Assessment. Her passion lies in eLearning Instructional Design and student assessments that promote student engagement, retention, and long term professional success.

Tony Siassi
Continuing Contract Coach, Belle Glade & Loxahatchee Groves Campuses

In 1994, Tony Siassi began working at Palm Beach State College as a Mathematics Tutor. In 1997, Tony Siassi moved on to the Belle Glade campus of PBSC to teach a variety of Mathematics courses on campus and online. His passion is student success and retention. He is honored to have obtained a few awards throughout his teaching career: Endowed Faculty Chair Palm Beach State College Joe and Emily Lowe Foundation 1999 -2001, Teacher of Excellence Palm Beach State College 1998 -2000, Glades Endowed Chair Palm Beach State College 1998-1999, National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development Excellence Award University of Texas at Austin 1998 – 1999, Professor of the Year Nomination Broward College 1996 – 1997, Teacher of Excellence Nomination Palm Beach State College 2001 – 2002, Professor of the year Palm Beach State College 2007 – 2008. Michele Tiggle-Stephenson
Continuing Contract Coach, Lake Worth Campus


Michele has been a full-time faculty member in the BAS Program since 2013.  She has served as department chair over the health management concentration since 2017.  As part of the Emerging Leader’s program in 2017 she provided the foundation website for current adjunct faculty development webpage.  She has contributed in areas of curriculum, PBSC’s Strategic Plan: Panther Strong 2023, search committees, and the list goes on.

Michele is driven, and passionate about student success and the success of others.  In 2017, she was a candidate for continuing contract. The process was rather cumbersome and challenging.  However, after much consideration and other areas, she was granted continuing contract in Fall 2019. She is eager to serve as continuing contract coach for her fellow peers.
