FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is Dual Enrollment?
Dual Enrollment (DE) is a part-time program where students attend college courses at PBSC and/or their high school to earn credits toward fulfilling high school graduation requirements, while also earning credits toward a college degree.
What is the cost to participate in DE?
There is no cost for application and tuition. For Palm Beach County public school students, there is no cost for textbooks. Their guidance counselor will provide them with a book voucher. The voucher is taken to Booksmart (locations in Lake Worth and Boca Raton) to receive the free textbook.
Does my student need to either be a resident of Palm Beach County or attend a school located in Palm Beach County?
How do I qualify for DE?
Qualified students are required to earn passing scores on the College Placement Test (PERT), ACT and/or SAT. These scores indicate readiness for college-level work. DE students must hold an unweighted high school GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Is there a deadline to take the PERT test and sign up for DE?
The schools have deadlines for students to request and qualify for Dual Enrollment for the following term. Students should work within the guidelines of their school. Students should refer to the PBSC academic calendarfor appropriate registration dates for the semester applicable to them. Seats are limited and fill quickly, so the sooner students qualify, notify their counselor and complete the process, the better.
How do I get started?
Students should meet with their high school counselor first to make sure they are eligible for the program. All DE students must complete an online application, submit college level placement test scores (SAT, ACT, PERT), attend a mandatory information session, and submit a “Palm Beach State College Dual Enrollment Permission and Registration Form” to dual enroll.
In addition, private school students must submit an official transcript (sealed in envelope); home schooled students must submit a “Legal Compliance and Eligibility Form” (signed by school district).
Where are the DE classes held?
DE students can participate in classes held at any of our five campuses (Lake Worth, Boca Raton, Bell Glade, Loxahatchee, and Palm Beach Gardens). Our courses are also offered online.
How are dual enrollment courses accommodated into my student’s high school schedule?
Students participating in DE on PBSC campuses are allowed early release by their high school to accommodate their college course schedule.
Can my student, who is in a magnet/AICE/IB, etc. program at their high school, still dual enroll?
Yes, but they should meet with their high school counselor to discuss best options.
How do I register for classes?
Students will register for classes online in their PantherWeb account.
Will my credits from PBSC transfer to other Florida colleges and universities?
Yes, your credits will be fully transferable within the state of Florida; however, for private or out-o-f-state schools, you should inquire of that school.
What resources are available at PBSC?
PBSC provides a variety of resources aimed at student success including:
- PBSC instructors who have office hours for one-on-one student help,
- Libraries and Student Learning Centers (SLC Labs) on each campus that offer resources and free tutoring,
- A Counseling Center which provides services and programs to help students maintain their emotional well-being to achieve their educational goals,
- A Technical Support Help Desk is available at 561-868-4000 for help technology issues,
- Accommodations for hearing or vision loss, a chronic illness, an emotional, learning or physical disability can be made with The Center for Student Accessibility at each campus,
- A Career Center that can help develop soft skills, assist with job placement and identify a career path,
- Students can also register to take a tour of their home campus, so they’ll know where to get the services they need to succeed.
Is transportation provided for DE students?
All students are responsible for their own transportation.
Are DE students able to participate in extracurricular activities on the PBSC campus?
Yes, and they are strongly encouraged to! There are many student clubs, organizations and extracurricular activities for DE students to participate in.
If I desire to remain at PBSC after I graduate high school, what do I need to do to become a traditional student?
We would be glad for you to remain a student at PBSC after you’ve met all high school graduation requirements. Please meet with our Admissions/Registration team at the campus of your choosing so we can help you enroll! Make sure you ask about our Finish4Free program!
