What is STEAM?
For many years, there has been a push in education for the STEM fields: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Employers, researchers, and educators have long sounded the alarm that the workforce is underprepared for the jobs of the 21st Century. As a result, schools have been striving to enhance the knowledge and skills of tomorrow’s employees in these lucrative, important fields.
In recent years, it has been recognized that without creativity and innovation, and without beauty, the STEM fields are static. Knowledge of the facts, figures, and functions of the STEM fields can only go so far. We must make new discoveries, learn new things, develop new ideas, and innovate in order to progress.
Moreover, 21st Century jobs require creativity, innovation, problem solving, and critical thinking. When memorization of facts, figures, and functions come at the cost of creativity, children suffer in the short-term, which ultimately impacts the future workforce.
Integrating STEM with the arts lays a solid foundation for innovative thinking for the inventors and innovators, and scholars of the future.
The STEAM Preschool team aims to holistically mix creativity with STEM learning. We emphasize creativity, innovation, playful learning, investigation, discovery, fun, and thinking. We believe this combination of the arts and creativity with STEM learning instills children with an interest and curiosity about the world around them. They seek to discover answers to their own questions about science, technology, engineering, and math. We believe that is a powerful combination.
We recognize this approach is unfamiliar to many teachers, and it can be challenging to learn to implement it effectively in developmentally appropriate ways. We’ve created this site to help preschool teachers and families find ways to increase creativity, innovation, thinking, learning, and fun while helping children develop an interest in and knowledge of STEAM.

On September 22, 2018 nearly 800 visitors attended STEAM Fest at the Lake Worth campus of Palm Beach State College. The Institute of Excellence in Early Care and Education, STEAM Preschool, the Professors and Students of the Math, Science, and Physics Clubs, and the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium partnered to bring engaging, hands-on STEAM activities to children and their families.
This fun, exciting event was very well received. We're looking forward to a bigger, better (less hot) STEAM Fest 2019 -
