I have a Bachelor of Science in Botany & Zoology from the University of Punjab, Lahore. At the University of Punjab, I went on to achieve my Master of Science in Zoology. I came to the United States, and attended the University of Hawaii at Manoa. I have a Master of Science in Entomology, and went on to obtain my Ph.D. in Entomology as well.
My M.Sc.thesis at the University of Punjab was: “Population fluctuation of Anopheles Mosquitoes around Lahore, Pakistan”. I was awarded the Sir Robert William Gold Medal for my Valedictorian status in Zoology at the University of Punjab. I traveled to Iran to work as a CENTO associate, where I conducted a molecular study of cancer cells in albino rats. My cytological and histological study projected a correlation between Olive Oil and elimination of cancer tumors. The study was not allowed to be published due to political reasons. I was awarded theEast-West Center scholarship in 1965 to study Entomology at the University of Hawaii, in Honolulu, Hawaii. I completed my Ph.D. in 1969.
I taught Economic Entomology and Embryology as an Assistant Professor at the Universityof Hawaii for one year. I worked on a USDA project involving the sterilization of fruit flies and the release of sterilized male flies in Hawaii before joining the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission as a Senior Scientific Officerfrom 1970-1972. Radiation was used to create genetically diverse crops of sugarcane and cotton where pest infestation was evaluated, along with other attributes. I also participated in research involving the Lethal Yellowing disease of Coconut Palms at the UF/IFAS Experimental Station at Ft. Lauderdale before joining the City of Miami, Department of Parks and Recreation. I worked for the department as a Horticulturist, covering 79 parks, a golf course, Bobby Maduro Miami Stadium, and the Miami Orange Bowl.
As Managing Director of Plant Experts Inc., I offered private service to hotels, condominiums, and developments in preserving palms, landscaping designs, and installation and maintenance of ornamental plants. I serviced the crop of coconut palms in several Key Biscayne hotels. The lives of these coconut palms was extended for 3 years during the infestation of Lethal Yellowing disease by antibiotic injections to the palms. I was also a managing director of 3 other plant nurseries in South Florida, where I supervised production of foliage plants and their shipment to Canada, New York, and Chicago by trucking. The plants coming from these nurseries were also sold on the QVC channel.
In addition to managing many corporation activities and consulting, I have taught courses for 28-30 years at: Miami Dade Community College, Broward Community College, and Palm Beach State College at the PGA, Belle Glade, Boca Raton, and LakeWorth campuses.
I have a passion for teaching and enjoy helping my students succeed in their academic careers. Aside from teaching, I have an adventurous spirit, and have always loved to travel – even at a young age. I traveled by the Oriental Express after the releaseof the James Bond movie, “From Russia with Love” in 1964. I also traveled to Cologne, Germany, and bought a Volkswagen which I drove all the way through mountains and deserts to Pakistan. A second trip was done from Amsterdam to Pakistan in 1970.
