What is a Healthcare Documentation Specialist / Medical Transcriptionist?
Healthcare Documentation Specialists / Medical transcriptionists are specialists in medical language and health care documentation requirements and standards. They transcribe voice recordings of detailed medical reports dictated by health care providers as well as edit reports generated by speech recognition technology (SRT) software. The medical transcriptionist is an integral member of the health care documentation team contributing to the creation of each patient’s legal medical record.
Earn the RHDS Credential
Program graduates may take the industry-recognized Registered Healthcare Documentation Specialist (RHDS) exam. The RHDS credential, offered by the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI), is highly respected in the industry and lets employers know you have the necessary skills to be employed as a medical transcriptionist and documentation specialists.
What Skills Does a Healthcare Documentation Specialist / Medical Transcriptionist Need?
While no previous medical background or experience is required, touch-typing at a minimum of 45 words per minute is highly recommended to enter the program. To achieve success in the field, students must reach a minimum of 65 words per minute upon program completion.

Where Does a Healthcare Documentation Specialist / Medical Transcriptionist Work?
They work for a variety of health care facilities and organizations. Most work remotely from home for medical transcription service organizations or acute care facilities. A computer and secure Internet connection are required to receive and submit work electronically. This portability makes medical transcription a great profession for military spouses or those who seek a nontraditional work environment.
What is the Potential for Advancement?
With work experience and upon achieving the Certified Healthcare Documentation Specialist (CHDS) advanced credential through AHDI, you may advance to positions such as a quality assurance editor/specialist or supervisor. They may also transition into medical coding, clinical documentation improvement, health informatics and other related roles. 27 credits from the Medical Transcription program may be applied toward the Health Information Technology A.S. degree at Palm Beach State College.
What You Will Study
The program was developed following the Florida Department of Education learning objectives as well as the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity’s (AHDI) model curriculum.
Program graduates will be able to:
- Apply correct medical style as defined by the AHDI Book of Style.
- Define, pronounce, spell and understand medical terminology related to anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, pathophysiology, general medicine and all specialties.
- Differentiate among common tests used in pathology and laboratory medicine, including diagnostic indications, techniques, expression of values and significance of findings.
- Demonstrate an understanding of health information management.
- Use industry-adopted computer technology and exhibit advanced keyboarding skills

How You Will Study
Many of the Health Information courses are available as a hybrid online course. You
will be required to attend class once per week per course and the other half of the
course is offered online.
