Health Informatics Specialist

College Credit Certificate

The move to electronic health records (EHRs) is a seismic shift in health care. The federally mandated transition to EHRs has created a large and immediate demand for people who are trained and ready to implement EHRs in hospitals, physician offices, clinics, insurers, public health agencies and more.

This program is designed to prepare students for employment as entry level health informatics specialists or to provide supplemental training for persons previously or currently employed in related health record occupations. IT workers from other industries also may use this certificate program to redirect their careers, as may those in allied health care professions who wish to change their focus to health informatics.

Earn Important Credentials

The Certified Healthcare Technology Specialist (CHTS) credentials from the American Health Information Management Association are quickly gaining value in the job market. The credentials were developed to recognize highly skilled technology workers who can support the adoption and meaningful use of EHRs. Formerly known as HIT Pro, CHTS certification exams assess competency in six distinct health IT roles: workflow and data collection, hardware and software selection, vendor management, systems testing/installation, diagnosing IT problems, and training staff on systems.

As a graduate of Palm Beach State’s Health Informatics Specialist program, you will be eligible to take all six exams. Taking the exams and earning the CHTS credentials gives you an advantage with employers and demonstrates your commitment to the health care IT industry. For more information about CHTS, visit:

This College Credit Certificate program was developed to deliver the learning objectives of the Florida Department of Education and AHIMA.

You’ll gain knowledge and abilities in:

  • Electronic health/medical record systems
  • Data and workflow management
  • Health informatics project management
  • Ethical, legal and security concerns
  • Health data analysis
  • Clinical classification systems
  • Reimbursement methodologies
  • Health care statistics and research

How You Will Study

This program is offered in a hybrid format, in which students use technology continuously and engage with faculty and each other, both in the classroom and online, in each course throughout the program.

Are you new to online learning? These quick self-assessments will help you understand the technical skills, time commitment and other factors that will impact your success as a student.

Students will participate in course activities, including class attendance, reading, homework, lab activities and other course requirements approximately 8 to 12 hours a week per course.

Course content is “threaded” knowledge. This means each course contains the knowledge and skills needed for the courses that follow. The recommended course sequence maximizes student success.

Knowledge and skills are reinforced through hands-on learning in virtual lab environments that simulate current industry tasks.
