About the Program
The Barbering program is designed to prepare the student to successfully pass the Florida barber license exam. As a Barbering student, you will learn:
- Hair cutting and styling
- Beard and mustache trimming
- Shaving and skin care services
- Hair coloring and chemical processes (hair relaxing, permanent waving)
- Salon management
- Safety, health and sanitation
- Barbering law and ethics
Students build their barbering skills in a modern salon environment and gain hands-on experience performing services for other students as well as paying clients.
Barbering program graduates are eligible to take the barbering license exam and apply to the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation for the barber license. Upon passing the exam, students will become licensed barbers, eligible to perform all barbering services in Florida.
Admissions and Financial Aid Info
No high school diploma or GED is required. Follow these steps:
- Apply at www.PalmBeachState.edu/Admissions.
- There is a one-time $40.00 application fee.
- All applicants are encouraged to complete the federal FAFSA application for financial aid via fafsa.ed.gov.
- Submit all high school and college transcripts.
- Take the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) exam, unless you are exempt from TABE testing.
- Sign up for classes.

What is the schedule for the Barbering program?
This is an evening program and it begins in August. Students are in class Monday through Thursday from 6 – 10 p.m.
How long does the program take?
Students will complete the evening Barbering program in approximately 20 months. The program consists of 10 courses, taken sequentially, with each course building upon the knowledge and skills gained in the previous course.
What is the cost of the program?
The in-state tuition fee is approximately $4,800 (this includes an upgraded hair kit valued at $700 and a Medical Insurance Fee of $16.16 per year). Non-Florida resident tuition is approximately $15,000. In addition, a textbook will be required. Financial aid may cover the cost of all tuition, books, and fees for qualifying students.
Are uniforms required?
Yes, black scrubs and black closed toe shoes are required. No sandals or open toe shoes allowed.

Barbering, cosmetology, facial and nail services are open to the public and Palm Beach State community for reasonable fees.
