Summer Youth College at PBSC's Boca Raton campus is Boca's best kept secret! The summer program is for
children ages 8 through 14 featuring activities specializing in Science, Technology,
Engineering, Arts & Math! There's no homework, grades, or tests here... our only requirement
is having fun while learning! Note: Students who are currently 7 years of age must
attend an open house to be eligible for an exception. SYC is the last camp you'll

Learn to play or improve your chess game. The theory and principles of chess will
be taught through problem solving assignments. General knowledge of the rules and
strategies of the game will be learned while playing against each other and the instructor.
You may even participate in a tournament or two.
That's Sew Crafty
Have you ever used a sewing machine? Once you mastered the basics, you will be able
to transform a plain piece of fabric into something wonderful! Maybe make a T-shirt
into a pillow or a dress, redesign and upcycle your old clothes into new fashions,
or just make plain old placemats - your choice! Be creative!
Beat The Drums
Explore the exciting world of Drums and Percussion and their roots through many musical examples and recordings. Learn "hands on" how to play different percussion instruments along with thirteen basic drum rudiments and how to read music and perform different styles and grooves. FUN GUARANTEED!
In this fun class you will learn first hand what goes on in a science laboratory.
You and your teammates will enjoy doing various experiments using microscopes, stethoscopes,
magnets and light while following proper safety procedures. You will even become a
"science detective" for a day. This class is sure to keep you interested from the
first day till the last.
Learn the techniques that professional cheerleaders know to give your cheers extra
spirit. A combination of calisthenics and deep stretching will get you into shape
to do your own cheers individually and as a team. Vocal skills, dance techniques,
and movement will help you look like a pro.
Have you ever wanted to make your own movie? You create the script, the soundtrack,
and your very own blockbuster. Be the director you've always dreamed of by creating
your own short film. Come learn how using Windows Live Movie Maker. Every student
will have their own movie to take home at the end of the summer.
Cityscape is a hands- on architectural, engineering and artistic venture exploring
the principles of building and design. Each lesson will discuss the challenges, needs
and requirements of engineering and architectural opportunities based on different
environments such as cityscapes, aquatic cities, mountainscapes and underground living
habitats. We will be inspired weekly by different architects, artists and their projects.
Every project will have a computer designed element as well as a hands on creation
of each individual’s 2D or 3D model of their computer based concept design.
Enjoy the cultural experience of learning different dances from Europe and Russia.
Not only will it be fun, but you will be fit as you strengthen, stretch and tone your

into either a creative piece of art or something useful. Or maybe some animal, or
a keepsake for your family and friends. Join the class and learn how to use the potter
Join local artist and teacher Jana Newton as she creates a studio environment where
you will explore mixed media techniques. Hands-on projects include using found objects
and items of personal interest and importance.
Science Fair Fun
A science fair project is like a mystery. You are the detective searching for clues
and answers! Join us to get a FUN head start on your next science fair project. Select
your own mystery to solve and learn how to creatively design methods to uncover the
clues you need to get the final answer.
Students will examine the world of Harry Potter through literature and movies. They
will compare and contrast the movie world of Harry Potter and the literature world
as well. Students will look into the validity of potions and create their very own
in class. Students will also examine the magical creatures through research and presentations.
Take the first steps into the world of mobile app design and customize your own game
app! Using a specialized app & game development tool, students will explore the world
of web-based (HTML5) mobile apps. In addition to learning the basics of mobile app
design and game development, you will also see firsthand how the world of App publishing
functions. Student-created apps will be accessible on a private site and can be played
on any mobile device or computer. Publishing to App Stores not included. No prior
experience is necessary and students do not need to own a smartphone or tablet to
take the class. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program.
The Rise Of Civilizations
Do you love learning about the past? Do you always have your head in a Percy Jackson
book? Ancient civilizations will STEAM( Science, Technology, engineering, art, math
and music) through ancient civilizations. Every week we will cover either Mesopotamia,
India, China, Egypt, Greece or Rome through center based learning. Each rotating center
will cover either the science, art, architecture, engineering, philosophy, language,
technology or political contribution that that culture has contributed to society.
Every week will contain take home projects and important philosophical lessons.
Writers are often inspired by their own experiences. We will explore the words of "mentor authors" to create beautiful innovations. We will practice planning, drafting, revising and editing in our writer's notebook before we publish beautiful works of literary art, straight from our hearts! Students will learn how to think like a reader and a writer. Picture or trade books will be used as mentor texts to launch various creative writing lessons. The primary focus will be taking small moments and transforming them into works of literary art.
If you love the game Minecraft, and always wanted to design your own world, this class
is for you! Learn how to create a custom map, the basics of creating 3D models using
a new software to design your very own objects, how to build with Redstone and Command
blocks, and create custom textures for you to import at home or share with friends.
To access their project at home, students must own a PC/MAC version of Minecraft.
Tablet, phone, and game console versions of Minecraft are not compatible. Parent email
address is required to use 3D modeling software. Students will work in pairs or teams
for most of the program.
Wheel-throwers and hand-builders unite! SYC pottery students with 3+ years of prior
experience in the studio, this class is designed especially for you. You asked for
new glazes, more challenging tools, terra cotta clay, MORE TIME... we got it all for
2016!! Refine your skills, learn new techniques, and explore your creativity while
choosing projects you most enjoy. A short lecture series will focus on the basics
of setting up a ceramics studio at home. Topics will include tips for finding quality
equipment on a budget, how to load and fire a kiln, and much more!
Awaken the peaceful warrior in you. Timeless exercises from the days of the Samurai
that strengthen and tone the body and mind. Gain confidence and self-discipline with
this unique class. Students will be guided through various vigorous routines promoting
the balance needed to carry on a healthy life. Several self-defense escapes will be
shown. Open discussions on health and exercise will be conducted throughout this course.
Did you know your iPad can help you become a better writer, problem solver, and researcher?
You will complete a variety of creative projects, using different apps. Bring in your
favorite book (one you have read) and make a book commercial. Make high quality digital
art to add to items such as coffee mugs, tote bags and much more.
Paintbrushes & Pencils
Students will utilize different painting techniques, tools, textures to paint and
draw everyday objects. You will learn basic drawing techniques and the art of shading,
blending, cross- hatching, stippling and color pencil methods. The class will conclude
with an impressive painting / drawing suitable for framing.
Harvest the sheer power of the sun. Students will learn the basics of a how solar
panels and solar engines operate to produce electricity. They will construct various
vehicles, devices, and machines, that all will harvest the power of the sun's rays
to operate in various methods.
Math Is Everywhere
Math is not just adding and dividing numbers; it can be used to solve day-to-day problems.
Through hands-on activities, you will tackle probability, measurements, fractions
and algebra…all in an "edutaining" way. After completing this class, solving math
problems will be a breeze!
Listen to your body. Stretch and breathe and relax and have fun. Everything learned will help you in school. YOU CAN DO IT! Did you know that the postures all have the names of different animals? Bring your exercise mat and/or towels.
Want to get mad at a punching ball? Here is your chance! Whoever thought getting fit
could be so much fun? Your instructor will teach you how to move, strike and kick.
The Orient Express
Have fun learning basic Chinese conversational language, pictorial characters, and
the beautiful culture. There will be songs, stories, folk dance, calligraphy, Chinese
painting and crafts.
Let Them Eat Cake
Ever wondered how they make those wonderful cake creations? How do the decorations
stick? How did they make the flowers? What is the best frosting? You will learn all
that and finish the class by designing your own masterpiece!
Join a growing network of teen leaders. Meet current local community leaders and experts
in key fields such as government, health care, environment, education, social services,
business, public safety, the arts and media.
During this class your team will learn to program a robot to overcome daily class
challenges using visual and text based programming. You will see firsthand how your
program translates into action as you attempt to control your robot sensors and maneuver
around obstacles. With your teammate, you will apply different coding concepts while
using the scientific method to formulate, observe, experiment, test, and modify your
robot. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program.
Welcome to the art class where you can have it all! You will work with Crazy Animals
(creating free-standing animals out of recycled items), Watercolor Painting (learn
to create art with watercolor painting on canvas), and Tissue Paper Art (use multi-color
tissue paper to create 3D and 2D art). Come and discover various art techniques while
working with three different mediums. This is the art class where you truly can have
Strings And Keys
Activities designed to promote musical learning across ages. Activities include playing
instruments keyboards and guitars and exploring different sounds. In a mixed-age
setting allowing you the freedom to develop basic skills like keeping a beat on your
own. Join us for some toe tapping fun! In addition, you will gain experience of performing
in front of an audience. Overall, you are able to learn the discipline of practicing
and performance habits and develop a life-long love for music and learning.
Do you like to solve mysteries? Are you good at paying attention to small details? Want to learn how to become a good forensic detective? This class is all about forensics and crime scene investigation and how one needs the other to solve a crime. This course will involve learning about the different fields in forensic science and how each can be important in catching a suspect. Areas of study will include Forensic Pathology (the body), Anthropology (bones), Entomology (bugs), and Toxicology (poisons). It also examines how crime scene investigators properly secure a crime scene and record evidence like fingerprints and blood spatter. All this could come in handy because you might need to solve a mock (pretend) murder at SYC!

After Care: 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm
Lunch is scheduled from 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. each day and must be provided by parents (preferably NUT FREE) , or a hot lunch can be purchased through the college cafeteria for $5.50. Payment can be made with cash or a collegePantherCard.

Parents must complete all camp forms (available on the website and at the Parent Orientation).
Parents must commit to picking up their children on time, every day. The camp will only be open until 5:30p.m. If you are later than 5:30pm, you will incur a late fee for each minute you are late.
