The Lake Worth campus offers fine arts workshops that are tailored for students ages 8-18 depending on the workshop. Students can choose a workshop in Art, Film, Photography, Theatre, DRUMLINE, Before Care & After Care and BAK & Dreyfoos School of the Arts Prep Workshop. Our goal is to provide each student with a high quality, accessible and affordable education in a college environment without the pressure of grades, homework or tests!

 

Mandatory Student Forms MUST be completed and turned in on the student's first day of the program.

Student's will not be permitted to attend without them.

All supplies are included in the registration fee and are non-toxic.

Week 1:  June 5th - Contour Line / Gesture Drawing

  • Introduce students to artists who use line work and/or gesture in their work.
  • Still life for contour line, line variation, pattern, composition (foreground, middle-ground and background) & gesture drawing.
  • Experiment with students posing for 30 sec. to 1 minute for figural gesture drawing practice.

Week 2:  June 12th -  Still Life / Figure Drawing

  • Introduce students to artists known for still life and for figure drawing.
  • Still life for first half of the week.
  • Students to pose for short periods of time for figure drawing, as well as using the skeleton and ceramic busts.

Week 3:  June 19th -  Landscape & Abstract Painting

  • Introduce students to artists who are known for landscape painting and abstract painting.
  • Brief introduction to painting, and color.
    • Primary/Secondary
      • Mixing color to create different colors.
    • Adding Black (shade)
    • Adding White (tint)
  • We will do Master Copies of famous landscape & abstract paintings.

Week 4:  June 26th -  3D Sculpture

  • Introduce students to sculptors.
  • Brief overview of how to use air drying clay.
  • Modeling:
    • Set up still life and have students model the still life out of clay.
    • Once dry students may paint their sculptures.

Week 5:  July 3rd -  Painting with Watercolor

  • Introduce students to known watercolorists.
  • Brief overview of how to use watercolor paint, layering, adding water to create different opacity/transparency.
  • Still life using watercolors.

Week 6:  July 10th  - Mixed Media / Altered Canvas

  • Introduce students to mixed media artists.
  • Overview of collage/mixed media.
  • Still using mixed media.

Week 7:  July 17th  -  Printmaking & Metal Embossing

  • Introduce students to low relief sculpture/artists, and printmakers.
  • Overview on how to create a linocut print.
  • Set up still life, and/or have printed images of flowers/nature, animals. Students can then draw what they’d like on a sheet of paper, they will then transfer onto the linoleum block.

Week 8:  July 24th  -  Cartooning & Storyboarding 

  • Introduce students to the concept of cartooning and storyboarding.
  • Have students write down a few of their favorite:
    • Thing to do
    • Adjective/descriptive word
    • Place (real or imaginary)
    • Color
    • Pattern
    • Name
  • Have students create their own cartoons, based on the above.
  • This can also be a group project where students can collaborate on a single storyboard.


Art Workshop Instructors

  • Registration for these workshops is NOT an open registration.  Admission to these workshops is by review of the child's current artwork.

This is a practical workshop in film television and video production.
Each week the children will be working in groups to write and produce their own films.  
They begin the film making process by:

  • Brainstorm ideas
  • Write scripts
  • Create storyboards
  • Scout locations
  • Edit their films by adding special effects and music 

Then they will bring their wondrous tales to life on screen.  Films will be uploaded to our YouTube page the following week for your viewing pleasure!!

Students will be broken up into two age groups within the workshops.

  • Ages 8-11 years old
  • Ages 12-14 years old

The goal of the Photography Workshop at Palm Beach State College is to teach students the Art of Photography.  To teach them new skills in shooting and modern photographic technique. We will give them the tools to learn how to harness the power of their imaginations by digitally manipulating the photos. Each week we will review the basics and learn new things so there is no limit to how much the students can gain from the program.

Students will be broken up into two age groups within the workshops.

  • Ages 8-11 years old
  • Ages 12-14 years old

Week 5 (July 3rd)  

   Monday: Photography Basics

  • Introduction to photographic arts will cover the basics of Photography and important terms and techniques
  • Landscape/Nature Photography
  • Introduction, learning how to shoot in nature
  • Introductory Photoshop tutorial
  • Peer Critique

   Tuesday: Say Cheese!

  • Introduction to Portraits and different styles of portraits, and techniques to achieve the best portrait
  • Intro to Macro photography and photographic studies (Breaking down an item into all of its parts)
  • Photoshop tutorial on how to create striking portraits, and creating collages.

  Wednesday: Action Photography

  • Introduction to Action Photography, the students learn how the types of Action Photography, and the techniques of how to created them.
  • Sequence Photography
      • They need to bring a change of clothes because they will be getting wet today
  • Introduction to Light Painting and Slow Shutter Photography
  • Learn to create a conceptual idea for a photo shoot
  • Split into groups and plan a shoot around a theme they pick

   Thursday: Conceptual Photo shoot

  • Finalize the compositions that they have been working towards all week and showcase their art work
  • Reshoot if needed
  • Final Contest

Week 6 (July 10th) 

   Monday: All The Small Things

  • Review photographic terms and techniques for the returning students, and introduce them to the new ones
  • Nature photography concentrating on close ups of things, known as macro photography
  • Photoshop tutorial
  • Peer Critique

   Tuesday: Get Close

  • Close up portraits
  • Forced perspective photography
  • Photoshop tutorial on how to create striking portraits and creating collages

   Wednesday: Action Photography

  • Types of Action Photography and the techniques of how to create them.
    • Action Photography
    • Sequence Photography
  • They need to bring a change of clothes because they will be getting wet today
  • Light Painting and Slow Shutter Photography
  • Introduction to Conceptual Photo Series

   Thursday: Conceptual Photo Shoot

  • Help students create a story using photography.
  • Group critique and student judged Photo of the Day

Week 7 (July 17th)

   Monday: Introduction to Black & White Photography

  • Introduction to Black & White Photography by comparing and contrasting the difference between the two styles.
  • Review the basics of Photography and important terms and techniques
  • Black and White Landscape & Nature Photography
      • The new students will be learning more about photography, while the returning students will be incorporating what they have already learned.
  • Introductory Photoshop tutorial and how to properly change an image from color to black & white
  • Peer Critique

   Tuesday: So Dramatic

  • Introduction to Black & White Portraits and Street Photography
  • Recreate a famous portrait that the student picks
  • Photoshop tutorial on how to create deep and meaningful black and white portraits

Wednesday: Action Photography

  • Black & White Action Photography
      • Students will learn the types of Action Photography, and the techniques of how to create them.
  • Sequence Photography
      • They need to bring a chance of clothes because they will be getting wet today
  • Photoshop hand coloring tutorial
  • Introduction to Light Painting and slow shutter photography
  • Form groups for a Magazine/Poster group concept

Thursday: Conceptual Photo Shoot

  • Help each group create their planned image using my personal camera and photography equipment
  • Group critique and Student Judged Photo of the Day

Week 8 (July 24thBuilding a Scene

   Monday: Background/ Landscape Photography

  • Introduction to photographic arts by cover the basics of Photography and important terms and techniques
  • Develop theme for a final composition
  • Create a story or outline
  • Landscape/Nature Photography introduction, learning how to shoot in nature
  • Photoshop tutorial
  • Peer Critique

   Tuesday: Capturing a Character

  • Portraits, and different styles of portraits, and techniques to achieve the best portrait for your composition
  • Photoshop tutorial on how to incorporate different elements into one scene

   Wednesday: Mastering Photoshop

  • Develop their Photoshop skills and visualize concepts

   Thursday: Conceptual Photo Shoot

  • Finalize the compositions that they have been working towards all week and showcase their art work
  • Reshoot if needed
  • Final Contest

Theatre is looking for more students between the ages of 8 - 14 years old to sign up for the following roles for this year's production of The Wizard of Oz!

  • Munchkins
  • Chorus
  • Flying Monkeys
  • Tornado
  • Before Care:  7:00 am – 8:50 am
  • After Care:  4:10 pm – 5:30 pm
  • Only 50 spots available
  • Ages: All ages
  • $25 per week
  • The price is for Before Care OR After Care and must be purchased for the entire week.  Daily pricing is not available.
  • If your child is not picked up by 4:10 pm or dropped off prior to 8:50 am, they will be placed in the Before Care or After Care program and you will be responsible for the cost.

SYC Workshop Pricing

  • $149 per week. Only $4.66 an hour, $37.24 per day!  Excluding Before & After Care.
  • You can purchase any combination of workshops for 1 week or up to all 8 weeks to fit your schedule and budget!
  • The total cost for 8 week of the Lake Worth Summer Youth Arts Program is $1192.

Age Requirements: 8 – 17 years old program wide and vary by workshop

Registration Is Open Through June 25, 2018

Program Dates: June 4, 2018 – July 26, 2018

Program Length: 8 weeks, 31 days total

Program Days: Full day, Monday - Thursday, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm  (Closed Fridays and Wednesday, July 4th)

Lunch: Lunch can be purchased in the College Cafe' for a special SYC price of $5.50 or students can bring their own lunch.
