What is Health Information Management?

Health information management is the study of the principles and practices of acquiring, analyzing, and protecting digital and traditional medical information vital to providing quality patient care. You can find more career information and references at the bottom of this page.


Program requirements
To begin general education (first year) courses:


To begin core (second year - HIM specific) courses (Fall 2011 - Full-time day program, Spring 2012 part-time afternoon/evening):

Please review our HIM course listing and complete a limited access application before beginning core Health Information Management (HIM) courses.

  • Complete the Limited Access Application - link to application is in left nav bar of this page.

  • Fall entrance is for full-time day students.

  • Spring entrance is for part-time afternoon/evening students.

  • Application for Spring 2012 deadline November 15, 2011- application on left menu.
    Application Deadline Extended to December 5th, 2011

  • It is recommended for part-time students complete the Medical Information Coder/Biller CCC program before applying to the Health Information Management degree program.

Once you are accepted into the program:

ATTEND A MANDATORY ORIENTATION!!!

The following requirements must be completed by the appropriate deadline at the student's expense:

  • Current Physical Examination - forms will be provided in your acceptance letter.  
  • Background check - forms will be provided in your acceptance letter.
  • Negative Drug Screen - forms will be provided in your acceptance letter.

This program was developed to deliver learning objectives as stated by both the State of Florida Department of Education and the American Health Information Management Association.

The Health Information Management program is currently pending accreditation review by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). CAHIIM

What does a Health Information Technologist do?

The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) gives the general description for the associate degree:

The individual holding an associate degree in health information management is the technical expert in health data collection, analysis, monitoring, maintenance, and reporting activities in accordance with established data quality principles, legal and regulatory standards, and professional best practice guidelines. These functions encompass, among other areas, processing and using health data for billing, compliance, and surveillance purposes. In an e-health environment this individual performs these functions through the use of various electronic systems.

This includes, but is not limited to, the following job titles:

• Cancer/other disease Registrar • Clinical Coder/Compliance Auditor/ Vocabulary Specialist • Clinical Data Collection and Reporting Specialist • Data Integrity Specialist • Document Imaging Coordinator • Documentation Specialist • Information Access/ Disclosure Specialist • Quality Improvement Specialist • Reimbursement Specialist/ Financial Services Liaison • Instructor/Trainer
