2/6/2012

Palm Beach State outlasted Indian River State on Saturday afternoon in Elisabeth Erling Gym , 78-65. Although the Panthers won by 13 the game was more tightly contested than the score. At half both teams were deadlocked at 32. In the second stanza Indian River seemed to grab control of the game as they led 58-47 with 8 minutes remaining. However, Palm Beach wasn't finished as they used their defensive resolve to out score their opponent 31-7 the rest of the way to secure the victory.

The Panthers shot poorly (23/73) but did their damage on the boards as they outrebounded Indian River 63-38. 32 of their rebounds were on the offensive end. Palm Beach was led in scoring by Chris Cantino with 15, Waverly Austin had 14 and Demetrius Allen came off the bench to get 11. Freshman Kevin Thomas had a monster game on the glass as he collected 17 rebounds.

The win puts the Panthers in the thick of the conference title race as they are 5-1 and their overall record is 20-4.

The Panthers moved their conference record to 4-1 and overall mark to 19-4 as they defeated conference rival Broward 86-58 on Wednesday evening in Elisabeth Erling gym. The Panthers led 40-22 at the half and were never threatened in the second stanza. Balance was a key again for Palm Beach as they placed 4 players in double figures led by Antoine Allen and Waverly Austin with 15 apiece. Turnell Owens came off the bench with 11 followed by Kevin Thomas's 10. Austin also led Palm Beach in rebounds with 12.

In a foul plagued game it was fitting that the Panthers survived Brevard on Wednesday evening in Elisabeth Erling Gym 72-68 on four made free throws in the last 3 seconds. The teams combined for 49 fouls during the contest. The Panthers led 29-28 at the half and the second stanza neither team had a lead of more than 6. Palm Beach placed 4 players in double figures with Demetrius Allen and Antoine Allen contributing 13 apiece, and Chris Cantino and Kevin Thomas collecting 11. Thomas also had 10 rebounds to lead the Panthers to their 18th win in 22 tries. Palm Beach now stands alone in second place in the Southern Conference with a 3-1 record.

The Panthers recovered on the road Wednesday night from their first conference loss as they defeated Broward 72-47 in Southern Conference action. Palm Beach was solid in both halves limiting the Seahawks to 20 first half points and 27 in the second stanza. Palm Beach was up 36-20 and the half and the lead continued to grow to the final margin.

Palm Beach was led in scoring by Antoine Allen who had 23. The South Alabama signee was 9-16 from the floor which included 5 of 10 from 3. Waverly Austin contributed 9 points, 9 rebounds and 7 blocks for a fine overall game.

The Panthers stumbled out of the gate against Indian River State College on Wednesday eveing as they were defeated on their home floor 87-79. Although the lead changed hands 13 times, Palm Beach could never really gain control of the game due to their 22 turnovers. Waverly Austin and Chris Cantino both had monster games as they both collected double-doubles (Austin 21 pts., 12 rebounds-Cantino 19 points, 14 rebounds). In addtion guards Antoine Allen and Daryl Traynham had 12 pts apiece. The loss dropped Palm Beach to 15-4 and 0-1 in the Southern Conference.

Holiday Wrap up: The Panther Men's basketball team went 3-1 over the holiday break in preparation for Southern Conference play. Palm Beach defeated USC Salkehatchie (85-55), Brunswick Community College (97-71) and TAAG Prep Academy (98-67). The Panthers did lose to Carlton University, one of the top Canadian University programs, 92-74. Palm Beach will open Southern Conference play with a 15-3 record, a #16 ranking in the country and #4 in the State of Florida. The Panthers play Indian River on Wednesday Jan 11 to start Southern Conference play. Game time is scheduled for 7:30pm.

The Panthers split over the weekend in the Florida Juco Shootout defeating St. Johns River State College on Saturday 102-67 before losing a tough decision to #7 nationally ranked Chipola 55-52 on Sunday. In the Saturday contest, Palm Beach played one of its best games of the season thus far as they completely dominated St. John's at both ends of the floor. The Panthers led 46-27 at the half and really poured in on in the second stanza with a 56 point outburst. The Panthers had 4 players in double figures as sophomore Antoine Allen scored 28 pts. (6-10 from 3), Chris Cantino had 18, Waverly Austin tallied 14 and Daryl Traynham contributed 11. In addition, Cantino collected 11 rebounds and Traynham had 7 assists and 6 steals.

On Sunday it was a much different game as each team turned up the defense making it difficult to score for either side. Chipola led 28-27 at the break but the Panthers scored the first 11 points of the second half and Chipola had to grind it out to get back in the game. Chipola finally took the lead with under a minute to play on free throws and held on as a 3 pt attempt by the Panthers missed as time expired. Allen led the Panthers again in scoring with 15 points while Waverly Austin contributed a double-double with 12 pts. and 11 rebounds.

12/8/11

Sparked by the 3 point first half explosion from sophomore Antoine Allen, the Panthers overwhelmed State College of Florida at Manatee 89-60 Wednesday night at Elisabeth Erling Gym. Allen connected on 5 3 pointers in a row midway through the first half to push a close game into a 49-35 halftime advantage for Palm Beach. Allen the games high scorer scored all 19 of his points in the first stanza. Palm Beach continued to stretch the lead in the second half behind the play of Chris Cantino and Waverly Austin. Cantino had 18 points and 8 rebounds while Austin also contributed 18 (4 dunks) and 7 boards.

The Panthers suffered their first defeat of the season in the Panhandle Classic hosted by Chipola over the weekend. On Friday Palm Beach State survived their third straight close game and remained unbeaten by downing Pensacola in overtime, 81-77. The key to the victory is that Palm Beach outscored Pensacola 22-0 on second chance points as they dominated the boards 53-22. Leading 5 players in doulbe figures were Antoine Allen and Chris Cantino with 14, followed by Daryl Traynham (12), Juan Coronado (10) and Ray Gatling (10). Coronado led the Panthers in rebounds with 11 and Gatling dished out 7 assists.

Saturday was a different story as 2 of the top 5 teams in the country squared off and it was all Northwest Florida State. Palm Beach shot a miserable 25% from the floor and were outscored from the three point line 36-15. The final score was 97-60. Cantino was a bright spot for the Panthers as he collected a double-double with 13 pts and 15 rebounds while Daryl Traynham had 11 points.

In a sluggish, foul invested game the Panthers survived a late come back rally from Polk State to run their record to a perfect 9-0 at Elisabeth Erling Gym on Wednesday, 70-68. The slow moving game took over 2 hours to play but the Panthers were able to survive the scare going into this weekends Chipola tournament which features 4 of the top teams in the State, with 3 of the 4 teams getting national recognition. Chris Cantino had a double-double as he collected 14 points and 13 rebounds while 5-8 soph Daryl Traynham scored 18 points. The other double figure scorer was Antoine Allen who had 12.

The Palm Beach State Men's Basketball team continued their perfect season thus far as they defeated State College of Florida Saturday evening on the road 81-79. The Panthers fought back from a 12 point deficit and won the game on an offensive tip basket by sophomore Thomas Gabric with 1 tick on the clock.  Palm Beach's bench contributed heavily in the victory as Ray Gatling came off the pines to contribute 17 points, 4 assists and 4 steals while Gabric had 12 points and 8 rebounds. Last week's Florida Player of the Week, Waverly Austin collected 12 points and 10 rebounds while Demetrius Allen had 10. Palm Beach is now a perfect 8-0 on the year and will entertain Polk State College from Winter Haven at 7pm in Elisabeth Erling Gym on Wednesday November 30.

 

 

Palm Beach State College's Waverly Austin is this week's FCSAA Men's Basketball Player of the Week. Austin, a sophomore from Fredericksburg, Va., averaged 23.0 points, 11.5 rebounds and 3.0 blocks in two games last week, recording a double-double in both. Against St. Johns River State on November 18, Austin tallied 20 points on 10-of-13 shooting and 13 rebounds. The next day against Florida State College at Jacksonville, he hit 11-of-15 from the floor in a 26-point, 10-rebound effort. For the week, he shot 75.0 percent (21-of-28) from the field.

The #1 ranked team in the State remained perfect Saturday afternoon in Elisabeth Erling gymnasium but it wasn't altogether easy. The Panthers easily allowed the most points they have this season as they defeated TAAG Prep Academy 102-92. Palm Beach was led by sophomore and South Florida signee Waverly Austin with 22 points. The Panthers record now stands at 5-0 with the tough Jacksonville State College tournament coming this weekend on the road.

The Panthers remained perfect on the season Wednesday night as they defeated Polk State in Winter Haven 65-48. Palm Beach continues to show improvement at the defensive end of the floor while their offense continues to develop. The State's #1 team in the latest poll was led by University of Miami transfer Antoine Allen with 15 points and University of Massachusetts transfer Daryl Traynham with 11

The #1 ranked team in the State of Florida and #4 ranked team in the country remained perfect over the weekend as they defeated Lackwanna College from Scranton, Pa. 105-67 onFridayand IMG Basketball Academy 61-49 on Saturday in Elisabeth Erling Gymnasium.

On Friday's game, after playing a nearly perfect half and leading 56-31 the second stanza was marred by numerous fouls which slowed the game considerably. The two teams combined for 50 fouls before the 2 hour and 15 minute affair was over. The Panthers had 6 players in double figures led by a game high 21 points from Chirs Cantino. Cantino was followed by Waverly Austin's 20, Antoine Allen's 16, Darryl Trayham's 12, Demetrius Alen's 11 and Michael Cheatham's 10.

Saturday's event against IMG was more of a grind out affair as the visitors forced the Panthers into a half court game. As can be expected in the second game of back to back affairs neither team shot well with the score 35-22 at the break.The second half scoring continued to falter but the Panthers defense stayed consistent asthey came away with a 12 point win. Leading the way for Palm Beach State was Demetrius Allen with 18, Antoine Allen with 13 and Waverly Austin with 12.

Bolstered by their #1 State ranking and #4 National ranking the Palm Beach State Men's Basketball team overwhelmed Rise Academy Wednesday night in Elisabeth Erling gym 112-63. An unusually big crowd for such an early season event, the fans were entertained by threes, creative passing and impressive dunks. Leading the parade was Demetrius Allen who entertained the fans with 5 threes in the first half many from the NBA line. Allen led the Panthers with 29 points and was followed by 6-7 transfer Chris Cantino with 21.

A day after elevating themselves into the top 10 in the country, the Panthers lost their last regular season game to Indian River on the road, 82-80. Indian River controlled the game for 35 minutes and led by twelve with 5 minutes to go. Palm beach made a furious rally to tie the score at 80 but with 9 seconds left fouled Indian river on a 3 point attempt. "The River made 2 of 3 foul shots and Palm Beach missed a layup as time expired. Chris Colvin led the Panthers with 25 points.

Palm Beach now has a two week layoff as they are the #1 seed in the Southern Conference and are not required to participate in the Southern Conference post season tournament. The Panthers will play next in the State quarterfinals at 9pm (EST), March 3 against the #2 seed from the Mid-Florida conference in Marianna, Florida. That team is yet to be determined.

Palm Beach finishes their regualr season at 25-5 and 9-3 in the Southern Conference.

It's been a long time coming but the Palm Beach State Men's basketball team sits atop the Southern Conference as Champions as they defeated Brevard 76-71 last night in Melbourne. In the process the Panthers gained the automatic berth to the FCCAA State finals as the Southern Conference's #1 seed. It was a tale of two halves as Brevard was leading 37-29 at the end of the first stanza. But again, as they have done so often this year, the Panthers regrouped and outscored the Titans 47-34 to claim the victory. Palm Beach will open State tournament play on Thursday March 3 against the Mid Florida Conference Runner-up which is yet to be determined. That game is set for 9pm (EST). The Panthers will play Indian River State College on Wednesday Feb 16 on the road to wrap up the regular season.

The Panthers made a clean sweep of Broward on Saturday afternoon as they won 84-71 to maintain control of first place in the Southern Conference. Trailing by 8 at the half Palm Beach came back to gain control in the first 10 minutes of the second stanza. Freshman Ryan Frazier led 5 Panthers in double figures with 13. Antonio Johnson and Chris Colvin had 8 and 7 assists respectively. The Panthers return to action today, Monday Feb. 14 @ Melbourne against Brevard.

In a critical Southern Conference showdown the Panthers responded by defeating Miami Dade 94-76 in Elisabeth Erling gym on Wednesday evening. It was a 46-45 Panther halftime lead but Palm Beach imposed their collective will on the Sharks in the second stanza and gradually built their lead to the final margin. Chris Colvin was the difference in the second stanza offensively as he continuously hit shots and got to the free throw line but it was the defense and rebounding that improved holding the Sharks to only 31 points that proved the difference. Colvin ended the evening with 30 points while freshman Waverly Austin had a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds.

For the second straight game, the Panthers lost in overtime, this time double overtime as Brevard came into Elisabeth Erling Gym and gave Palm Beach their first home loss of the year, 106-103. Palm Beach trailed 43-32 at the half but immediately went on an 11-0 run to begin the second stanza. the Panthers eventually took a 14 point lead with about 10 minutes to go but the Titans came storming back forcing the game into overtime. The Panthers Demetrius Allen put the game into the second overtime as he nailed a three as time expired, however, there was no magic in the second overtime and John Hall's 55 footer at the buzzed fell short. Waverly Austin led Palm Beach with 21points while Antonio Johnson and Ryan Frazier each contributed 18.

The Palm Beach State College Panthers saw their latest 10 game winning streak come to an end on the road Wednesday night as they were defeated 97-85 in overtime by conference rival Miami Dade. The Panthers had the game under control leading 61-52 with 6:38 to go in the game, but the Sharks put on a furious rally hitting a 3 to knot the score up at 75 all with 27 seconds remaining . The Panthers could not get off a shot as time expired. It was all Dade in the overtime as they pulled away for the victory.

The Panthers current winning streak hit 10 in a row as they defeated Indian River (89-78) on Saturday Jan 29 and Northwood JV (105-55) Monday Jan 31 in Elisabeth Erling Gym.

Against Indian River it was a tale of 2 halves as in the first half it was a half court battle that had the teams deadlocked at 32. In the second half Palm Beach pushed the pace more and sprinted out to a double digit lead they never relinquished as they completed the first half of the Southern Conference schedule at a perfect 6-0. Four players scored in double digits for the Panthers as Waverly Austin collected a career high 34 points, and Antonio Johnson, Chris Colvin and Ryan Chambers each scored 12. Austin also had 19 rebounds and Colvin added 8 assists.

On Monday Jan 31, the Panthers jumped all over Northwood and glided to a 105-55 score. Double digit scorers were Remy Ndiaye with 21, Johnson had 18, Austin gathered 14, Darius Page collected 12 and Tom Gabric and Aaron Terry contributed 11 apiece.

The Panthers are currently 22-2, ranked #17 in the country and #2 in the State.

The Panthers defeated Broward on the road with an exciting 77-74 victory on Wednesday evening. Down 11 with 3 min. to go , Palm Beach staged a furious comeback that culminated in freshman Ryan Frazier drilling a 3 pointer as time expired. the Panthers put 4 players in double figures lead by Antonio Johnson with 19, Chris Colvin with 18, Waverly Austin with 13 and Aaron Terry 11. The Panthers improved their overall record to 20-2 and Southern Conference mark to 5-0. Palm Beach is currently ranked # 2 in the State and #17 in the nation.

The Panthers have taken control of the Southern Conference race after a third of the schedule has been completed with a perfect 4-0 record. In the process Palm Beach State has defeated Indian River (108-59), Broward (90-83), Miami Dade (69-54), and Brevard (75-65). The Panthers are currently on a 7 game winning streak, have an overall record of 19-2 and are ranked #3 in the State of Florida.

 The Panthers won 3 of 4 over the holiday break and then defeated State College of Florida last Wednesday evening 82-74 on the road in a tuneup for Conference action. It was not an easy task as the home squad took an 8 point lead into halftime. Palm Beach finally took the lead for good at the 6 minute mark of the game when Antonio Johnson completed a three point play as part of his 19 pts. From there the Panthers went on to earn the victory to push their overall season record to 14-2.

The Panthers split at the Florida Juco Shootout this past weekend defeating Santa Fe on Saturday afternoon 71-67 and losing to #5 nationally ranked NW Florida State on Sunday evening 87-74. In Saturday's contest the #1 state rated Panthers defeated #7 Santa Fe is a closely fought battle as Chris Colvin (17pts), Waverly Austin (16pts) and Antonio Johnson (14 pts) led the way. Austin also had a team high 9 rebounds.

On Sunday in the feature game of the 2 top rated teams in Florida the first half lived up to the billing as the game was a see saw affair with 16 lead changes. However, Northwest Florida hit a barrage of three pointers in the second stanza to pull away and give Palm Beach their first loss of the season. The Panthers placed 4 players in double figures as Chris Colvin tallied 20 points, Ray Gatling had 12, Antonio Johnson collected 11 and freshman Waverly Austin contributed a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

The Panthers continued their winning ways Wednesday night in Jacksonville as they defeated FSC@ Jacksonville 90-61. Freshman Waverly Austin led the way with 23 points and 10 rebounds and freshman Demetrius Allen collected 14 points. In addition, sophomore Chris Colvin had 11 points and freshman Aaron Terry contributed a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Panthers went on the road this evening and escaped with another close win 61-59 at Polk State College in Winter Haven. Palm Beach struggled offensively all night but they found Aaron Terry on a set play from out of bounds and Terry converted a layup as time expired. The Panthers continue their undefeated streak to 8-0. Four of their 8 victories have been by a collective total of 10 points.

The Panthers continued their outstanding start as they won three games this past week defeating Florida State College @ Jacksonville (84-79) on Wednesday evening in Elisabeth Erling Gym, Tallahassee (87-69) and Monroe, NY (92-91) in the Miami Dade Classic Saturday and Sunday. In Wednesday's hard fought victory in front of an enthusiastic crowd, the Panthers were led by freshman Waverly Austin (21 points) and sophomore Chris Colvin (19 points).

On Saturday, Palm Beach took on the #2 ranked team in the State and took it to them leading at one time by 28 points to show that they were a team to be reckoned with in the State of Florida.

Finally on Sunday, the Panthers battled Monroe from the Bronx toe to toe in an exciting game as freshman Ray Gatling netted two free throws with 5 tenths of a second to go giving Palm Beach a 92-91 victory.

PALM BEACH PANTHERS MEN'S BAKETBALL TEAM OPENS  SEASON   4-0

The 2010-11 Palm Beach State men's basketball team unveiled the season on Wed. Nov. 3 with a 65-63  win  at home over a very good Polk State College team. The Panthers found themselves down 55-47 with 5 min left but staged a furious rally to outscore their opponents 16 to 6 down the stretch and get the first win of the season. Sophomore , Antonio Johnson ( Melbourne, Fl. ) led 4 double figure scorers with 17 pts. Demetrius Allen ( Clewiston Fl.) 16 pts. ,Chris Colvin ( Chicago. Ill. ) 11 pts. and finally John Hall ( W. Palm Beach) 11 pts.

On Nov. 5th and  6,  Palm Beach State hosted the annual Battle By The Beach Classic. The Panthers played I. M. G. Academy out of Bradenton Fl and defeated them 81-52. Waverly  Austin ( Fredericksburg, Va. ) made his debut leading the way with 19 pts. followed by Darius Page ( Seattle Wa. ) with 12 pts and Remy Ndiaye  (Chicago) 12 pts.

The  next day the Panthers met a very tough Lackawanna C. C. team  from Pennsylvania and got their 3rd win of the young season with an 83-71 victory. Once again the Panthers  showing a very balanced attack had 4 players in double figures . Chris Colvin,the transfer from Iowa State, had his best game with 21 pts and numerous assists followed by Waverly Austin ,18 pts , Demetrius Allen, 12 pts and Antonio Johnson 11 pts.

On Wed. Nov, 10  the Panthers took to the road for the first time to take on the undefeated and  5th

ranked Daytona State Falcons. Again, the Panthers came out aggressively and established a 10 pt lead at the half.Eventually they were able to get their first road win of the season with a 82-68 win. Waverly Austin again led the way with a dynamic performance with 32 pts, 13 rebs. and 8 blocks. Demetrius Allen continue his hot shooting with 15 pts and Ryan Frazier ( Chicago, Ill. )  let everyone know he is back from his injury to notch 13 pts. Ray Gatling (Oxon Hill, Md. ) added  a beautiful floor game with 4 assists .
