Post-Secondary Vocational Certificate
The Firefighter program gives you top-notch instruction and training to fight any blaze, whether it's a small kitchen accident or a 200-acre brush fire. You also learn safety techniques, operation of fire alarms, operation of vehicles, apparatus and equipment and first responder medical techniques. You must meet certain criteria to be placed into the selection pool for this three-month program, which includes passing the physical ability test and scoring at least 70 percent on the National Firefighter Selection Inventory test. This also is a limited access program, which means you are selected using a point system based on work experience and Palm Beach State EMS program completion. After completing the program, you will be eligible to sit for the state licensing exam. Firefighters who are also emergency medical technicians can expect a starting pay around $46,000 in Palm Beach County while those trained as paramedics can expect to start at about $53,000.
