Trusting the Future
Michael Derilus, a Student Success Story
When Michael Derilus found himself in position to serve as a Student Trustee for Palm Beach State College’s District Board of Trustees, his first feeling was one of gratitude.
“I’m honored with this appointment. I want to use this position to bring awareness to Palm Beach State, which is a staple in the community.”
As with any good Honors College student, Michael did his homework, researching how to drive today’s students to a myriad of resources, something that has benefited him. Today, he serves as the vice president of the Honors Student Advisory Council, a role he never imagined just a few years ago.
With a love for learning and a growth mindset, Michael expresses empathy for those who may lack resources, understanding how advice, a listening ear, and the right people can make all the difference for one’s path in life.
“I want to give other students the same peace of mind I was fortunate to have. I am Lake Worth born and raised and the College is dear to my heart and a beacon of hope that can help secure a future.”
A first-generation-in-college student, Michael embraces his Christian values, happiest with his community of family and friends.
From struggling in high school to earning a Dr. Floyd F. Koch Presidential Honors College scholarship at PBSC, Michael represents the transformative impact PBSC has on thousands of lives. Now studying computer science, he has discovered a powerful community and life changing resources.

"I’m one of 12 siblings, and for the first time I felt like I belonged in a place built for growth. Palm Beach State College didn’t just open doors for me; it helped me believe I deserved to walk through them."
“I’ve definitely evolved during the last few years and want to be an example for my younger siblings as a person who gives others hope for their dreams – just as I had. I am living proof of what opportunity, belief, and support can create.”
Empowered by and indebted to Palm Beach State, Michael sees himself as a potential trailblazer, eventually starting a nonprofit for underrepresented students, his way of giving back and giving us hope and trust in the future.
