Michael J. MacMullen ---
Has been Director of Choral and Vocal music at Palm Beach State College since 1994 where he teaches Applied Voice and directs the Concert Chorus and the Troubadours (vocal jazz ensemble). He has also served as musical director for productions of Pippin, Dear World, A Funny Thing….Forum, The Robber Bridegroom (also stage director), The 1940’s Radio Hour, and Stephen Sondheim’s Assassins at PBSC. Other musical theatre credits include conducting shows such as West Side Story, Guys and Dolls, Fiddler on the Roof, Brigadoon, and Into the Woods. As a conductor/musical director/accompanist, he has worked with Coeur d’Alene Summer Theatre, Long Beach Civic Light Opera, Arizona State University, and a variety of college and community theatres. A graduate of Arizona State University, Michael holds Master of Music degrees in both Musical Theatre and Choral Music.
His varied career as a performer includes musicals, opera, and choral music. His experience in musicals includes leading roles in Sweeney Todd, A Little Night Music, Carnival, Jesus Christ Superstar, Dames at Sea, and Man of La Mancha. Locally, he has appeared with Palm Beach Light Opera in Naughty Marietta and as the title role in The Chocolate Soldier. He also appeared with the Choral Society of the Palm Beaches playing leading roles in their concert productions of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Mikado and H.M.S. Pinafore. Opera performances include Spoleta in Tosca with both the Lyric Orchestra and South Florida Opera as well as featured roles in productions of Norma and Carmen with SFO, where he also served as Chorus Master. His professional credits include performing in opera and concert with Opera Pacific, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra under John Mauceri, Pasadena Symphony, Long Beach Symphony, Pacific Symphony, and Pacific Chorale, including a tour of China performing Mendelssohn’s Elijah.
Locally he has sung with the Florida Philharmonic Chorus and Chamber Singers, Temple Sinai in Delray Beach, St. David's in the Pines Episcopal Church in Wellington (as baritone soloist), the Royal Poinciana Chapel Chorale in Palm Beach, and the Lost Tree Chapel Chorale in North Palm Beach. For many years, he was also conductor of the Bel Canto Singers based in Tequesta. In addition to vocal performing and conducting, he is an experienced pianist and accompanist, playing for both professional singers as well as college students and subbing at local churches. Currently, Michael is cantor at St. Matthew Catholic Church and section leader at St. Luke Catholic Church. He also serves as summer music director at Gardens Presbyterian Church.
