Associate in Arts (A.A.) Degree

The Associate in Arts transfer degree equals the first two years of a bachelor’s degree. By earning your A.A. degree at PBSC, you are guaranteed admission to one of Florida's public universities to complete your bachelor’s degree. You also may transfer to certain private institutions or PBSC bachelor's programs. Our A.A. degree advising tracks will help guide you in selecting general education and elective courses that fit your desired upper-division major and the requirements of your chosen transfer school. Always work with your PBSC academic advisor in making your final choices.

 

There are two options for completing the A.A. degree.

Option 1: 15 to Finish: 4 semesters with 15 credits per semester  |  Option 2: Flex to Finish: 6+ semesters with 6-11 credits per semester.

Science, Technology, Engineering & Math Degrees & Certificates

At PBSC, you can choose from many business career pathways. Each certificate and degree is a stepping-stone, either to the job market or to the next level in your education. 

Degrees:

  • AS: Associate in Science degrees prepare you for skilled employment or transfer to PBSC’s bachelor's programs and possibly other institutions.
  • BAS: Bachelor of Applied Science degrees give associate degree graduates the option to earn a career-focused bachelor’s degree.

Certificates:

  • CCC: College Credit Certificates give you marketable skills as well as college credits that can transfer to an associate degree.


Biotechnology

Overview

Play a vital role in of of the nation's fastest-growing industries. Biotechnology is the use of biology to enhance our quality of life and integral to the creation of products and services in many different fields, including pharmaceuticals, medical device development, disease diagnostics, crop improvement, crime solving and biofuels.

 

Biotechnology - Associate in Science (A.S.)

This degree program is designed for students who will seek employment as biotechnology research technicians, biological technicians, cell culture technicians or biotechnology manufacturing technicians, or for persons wanting career advancement already employed in the field. Course content includes biology and chemistry concepts, algebraic and statistical analysis, basic microbiology concepts, biohazard and safety procedures, human anatomy and physiology, core biotechnical laboratory techniques and industry workplace experience.

Courses from this program may transfer into Palm Beach State’s Bachelor of Applied Science program in Supervision and Management. In addition, courses from this program may transfer to other colleges and universities that allow students to transfer into a four-year program.


Biotechnology - College Credit Certificate (CCC)

The College Credit Certificate program has been designed for those students who are currently employed in the biotechnology industry or for those who would like to pursue a biotechnology career or have a bachelor’s degree in another academic discipline.

The Biotechnology College Credit Certificate provides the student with comprehensive knowledge, specific competencies and lab techniques that enhance current skill while establishing a foundation for a successful bioscience career.

Credits in this certificate program will transfer directly into the Associate in Arts (AA) or the Associate in Science (AS) degree program in Biotechnology.

 

Biotechnology Laboratory Specialist - College Credit Certificate (CCC)

The College Credit Certificate program has been designed for AA students interested in biotechnology concepts, techniques and equipment. Relevant topics such as molecular biology, recombinant DNA technology, nucleic acid (DNA and RNA) extraction and analysis, plasmid transformation, polymerase chain reaction and agarose gel electrophoresis will be covered. Students will gain a solid foundation in biology, chemistry, and microbiology.

The certificate provides the student with comprehensive knowledge, specific competencies and lab techniques that enhance current skill while establishing a foundation for a successful bioscience career.

Credits in this certificate program will transfer directly into the Associate in Arts (AA) or the Associate in Science (AS) degree program in Biotechnology

 

Computer Science & Information Technology

Networking

Overview

The program is designed to teach students the skills necessary to design, build, and maintain small to medium-sized networks. The knowledge gained will allow networking for the Small Office, Home Office (SOHO) market and the ability to work in small businesses or organizations with networks of fewer than 100 nodes.

 

Network Infrastructure - College Credit Certificate (CCC)

Based on the Cisco Networking Academy materials, this CCC has courses in networking, network terminology and protocols, network standards, local-area networks, wide area networks, Open System Interconnection models, cabling, cabling tools, Cisco routers, router configuration, Cisco switches and configuring switches. This course covers the competencies for the Cisco CCENT certification.

Credits in this certificate program will transfer directly into the Cisco Certified Network Administrator (CCNA) Routing and Switching CCC and/ or Associate in Science (A.S.) degree in Networking Administrator.

 

Advanced Network Infrastructure - College Credit Certificate (CCC)

Based on the Cisco Networking Academy materials, this CCC has courses in networking, network terminology and protocols, network standards, local-area networks, wide area networks, Open System Interconnection models, cabling, cabling tools, Cisco routers, router programming, Cisco switches, and configuring switches. This course covers the competencies for the Cisco CCNA certification.

Overview

By earning the B.A.S. in Information Management, you’ll gain the edge needed to pursue the best IT jobs and increase your earning potential. This two-year program requires an
associate degree to enroll. Those with equivalent credits may also be considered.

 

Information Management-Database Administration - Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS)

B.A.S. degrees are designed for students who wish to earn a bachelor's degree for career advancement after earning their A.A. or A.S. degree. After completion of this program, students may choose to apply for graduate study at a public or private university.

 

Three Concentration Areas:  

Database Administration Concentration

The program articulates from existing Associates in Science/Associates in Applied Science degrees in the computer science field. The core curriculum includes coursework in project management, systems design and programming, business law, finance and business writing.

 

Project Management Concentration

Graduates of this program will have the knowledge and skills to pursue managerial-level positions in an information technology/management information systems environment. Students take core courses that provide a broad applied background in finance, legal and ethical issues, communications, leadership, and project management. Additional courses focus on coursework to prepare students for employment in specialized areas in the information technology field, such as networking and security assurance or database administration and project management.

 

Security and Network Assurance Concentration

The program articulates from existing Associates in Science/Associates in Applied Science degrees in the computer science field. The core curriculum includes coursework in project management, systems design and programming, business law, finance and business writing.

Overview

This program prepares individuals to plan, install, configure, monitor, troubleshoot and manage computer networks in a LAN/WAN environment. Students will be prepared to apply conceptual and theoretical knowledge to the workplace utilizing technical skills learned during the program. This certificate covers the core competencies for networking but does not contain General Education requirements.

 

Information Technology Technician - College Credit Certificate (CCC)

Course content includes computer hardware concepts, networking terminology, Microsoft Windows Server and Active Directory implementation and administration, Linux implementation and administration, and network security. These courses cover competencies for several certifications: A+ and Network.

Credits earned in this certificate will transfer directly into the Information Management College Credit Certificate and the Associate in Science (A.S.) degree in Networking Administrator.

Overview

This college credit certificate is designed to teach students the skills necessary for entry level positions in the field of network security. Students will learn and demonstrate proficiency in programming, network design and operations, cyber security, ethical hacking, and penetration testing.

 

Network Security - College Credit Certificate (CCC)

Credits in this certificate program will transfer directly into the Associate in Science (A.S.) degree in Networking Administrator.

Overview

Network Support Technician - College Credit Certificate (CCC)

Credits in this certificate program will transfer directly into the Associate in Science (A.S.) degree in Networking Administrator.

Programming

Overview

Students learn to analyze business situations and to design, develop and write computer programs. Individuals learn to store, locate and retrieve specific documents, data and information, analyze problems using logic/analysis tools, and write code in several computer languages. They also learn how to test, monitor, debug, document and maintain computer programs.

 

Computer Programming - Associate in Science (A.S.)

Computer programming course content includes computer programming concepts, programming languages and software project management.

Courses from this program may transfer into Palm Beach State's Bachelor of Applied Science programs in Information Management or Supervision and Management. In addition, courses from this program may transfer to other colleges and universities that allow students to transfer into a four-year program.


Computer Programming Specialist - College Credit Certificate (CCC)

Course content includes computer programming concepts and programming languages.

This certificate covers the core competencies for programming but does not contain General Education requirements.

Credits earned in this certificate will transfer directly into the Programming College Credit Certificate and the Associate in Science (A.S.) degree in Programming.

 

Programming - College Credit Certificate (CCC)

Course content includes computer programming concepts, programming languages and software project management.

This certificate covers the core competencies for programming but does not contain General Education requirements.

Credits earned in this certificate will transfer directly into the Associate in Science (A.S.) degree in Computer Programming.

 

 

Electrical Power

Overview

Our labs, equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, from Instrumentation & Control training stations: process control modules, temperature control modules, sensor calibration modules, data acquisition centers, valves, fluid control modules, to wind turbine control and SCADA control centers, to Smart Grid and ZigBee modules, to alternative energy installations (small wind, and solar arrays), to biofuels lab, to OSI Software PI system centers, enable students to gain as much practical and hands-on knowledge as possible. In addition, with our cooperation with local industry and business partners, we assist students in obtaining internships and positions to further enhance their learning experience.

The program takes students from general education, through introductory classes in electrical field (circuits, electronics), though introductory theory about power systems, via basics of programming (microcontrollers, PLCs), to specialized classes in alternative energies, Smart Grid, and advanced Instrumentation and control. The program is Algebra based, and the only pre-requisite is willingness to work hard!

 

Electrical Power Technology - Associate in Science (A.S.)

Upon completion of this program, students may seek employment in entry-level positions with a broad base of skills in instrumentation and control technology. Fields of employment include both aerospace and power industries. Job titles include instrumentation and control technician, control room technician, electronics technician, electrical distribution systems designer, engineering assistant, and technologist.

Courses from this program may transfer to other colleges and universities that allow students to transfer into a four-year program.

Overview

If you are interested in sustainable energy and want to build a rewarding career in a rapidly growing industry, then this program is for you.

This unique program prepares students for entry-level opportunities in the alternative energy industry. Technicians and others working in the electrical power industry will gain options for career growth and advancement.

 

Alternative Energy Engineering Technology - College Credit Certificate (CCC)

The Alternative Energy Engineering Technology certificate prepares students for careers in the growing "green" alternative energy industries. This program offers a sequence of courses that provides coherent and rigorous content and relevant technical knowledge and skills needed to prepare for further education and careers in the growing alternative energy career cluster; and includes competency-based applied learning that contributes to the general employability skills, technical skills, and knowledge of all aspects of alternative energy careers.

Courses from the program transfer directly into Palm Beach State's Electrical Power Technology AS degree program. In addition, courses from this program may transfer to other colleges and universities that allow students to transfer into a two or four year program. 

 

Engineering Technology

Overview

The demand for skilled technicians in technology and engineering fields has reached a critical level nationwide and in South Florida. Graduates of the Engineering Technology program are rapidly finding employment in the local engineering technology, power, aerospace and manufacturing industries. Local employers are seeking talented graduates with a desire to work with both their hands and heads.

 

Engineering Technology - Associate in Science (A.S.) Degree

Program graduates launch careers as engineering technicians or technologists who apply basic engineering principles and technical skills to operate high-tech equipment and assist engineers in product research and development, fabrication, quality control and more.

 

Four Concentration Areas:

Advanced Manufacturing
This concentration prepares students to work for manufacturers as a technician or engineering technologist in automation, robotics, mechatronics, or electrical/mechanical engineering.
 
Courses from this program may transfer to other colleges and universities that allow students to transfer into a four-year program.

 

Advanced Technology

This concentration prepares students to work as a technician or engineering technologist in product development and fabrication focused on drafting, 3D printing and rapid prototyping, manufacturing or quality assurance.

Alternative Energy Systems

This concentration prepares students to work as an energy technician or technologist in solar, wind and biofuel electrical power generation.

Courses from this program may transfer to other colleges and universities that allow students to transfer into a four-year program.

 

Electronics

This concentration prepares students to work as an electronics technician or technologist in the design and development of computers, telecommunications systems, medical devices and other electronic equipment.

Engineering Technology Support Specialist - College Credit Certificate (CCC)

Upon completion of this certificate, you may seek employment in an entry-level position in varying areas of engineering and manufacturing. There will be expanded employment opportunities due to Florida's projected additional needs for engineering technologists. Job titles include technician in engineering technology, engineering specialist, manufacturing technician, manufacturing specialist, engineering assistant or technologist.

Credits earned toward this certificate can be applied toward the A.S. in Engineering Technology degree. They may also transfer to other colleges and universities that allow students to transfer into four year program.

This program is designed for students seeking entry into the field of engineering technology with a focus on automation in manufacturing. It is also designed for employees in this field who seek further education and career advancement.

 

Automation - College Credit Certificate (CCC)

Upon completion of this program, students may seek employment in entry-level positions in advanced manufacturing. Job titles include technician in engineering technology, manufacturing technician, automation technician, engineering assistant, and technologist.

Courses from this program transfer to the Engineering Technology - Advanced Manufacturing Associate in Science degree program at Palm Beach State College.

Overview

This program is designed for the student who is seeking entry into the field of engineering technology, with a focus on the manufacturing process, quality assurance, lean manufacturing and Six Sigma. It is also designed for employees in this field who seek further education and career advancement.

 

Lean Manufacturing - College Credit Certificate (CCC)

Upon completion of this program, students may seek employment in entry-level positions in advanced manufacturing.

Courses from this program transfer to the Engineering Technology - Advanced Manufacturing Associate in Science degree program at Palm Beach State College.

Environmental Science Technician - College Credit Certificate (CCC)

This certificate is part of the Environmental Science Technology AS degree program. Its content is aligned with challenging academic standards and relevant technical knowledge and skills needed to prepare for further education and careers in agriculture, food and natural resources.

Upon completion of this certificate, you may seek employment in an entry-level position related to environmental science field and lab work. Employment opportunities include positions with local environmental consulting firms and/or with public agencies when emergency responders are needed as a result of the presence of hazardous materials or for temporary/seasonal employment positions.

Overview

This program covers analysis, handling, storage and dispensing of hazardous materials in accordance with appropriate federal, state, and local laws and regulations governing proper chemical management.

Graduates of the certificate program should be able to: research applicable local, state and federal regulations and implement methods and strategies to ensure compliance; maintain records as required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Department of Transportation; develop and implement hazardous materials handling procedures; plan for emergency response of hazardous materials incidents; and protect workers and communities from hazardous material exposures.
