Career advisors take to the radio waves

By Janell Carroll

Last month, career advisors Christina Barone, Raquel Gary and Myriam Torres participated in local radio station interviews to discuss the work of IEECE and how the needs of our students have been met during the pandemic. Christina Barone was interviewed by WPOM 1600AM, a local Creole radio station; Myriam Torres was interviewed by WPSP, a local Spanish radio station; and Raquel Gary was interviewed by WSWN Sugar 900AM, a radio station located in Belle Glade.

Reflecting on the experience, Gary, who joined IEECE in November 2018, said: “My experience was wonderful! The radio host was awesome; he created what felt like a family type atmosphere. I was able to give great information to the public about the IEECE and about our career advising program through a platform that has a broad reach. Following the interview, the radio host called to tell me that he had received calls asking for my contact information. Our message that education matters was heard!.”

“It was exciting to be part of the radio interview. It was such a great opportunity to let our community know about our program services,” shared Barone, who is celebrating her 11th year as a career advisor at IEECE. And Torres, who has been a career advisor to our Spanish-student population for 14 years, added: “It was a unique experience that allowed me to share with the Spanish community the importance of early childhood education and the role of parents in that education. We were able to recognize the amazing job of the educators in the field.”

During the interviews, the career advisors discussed topics such as the importance of early childhood education, our unique research-based approach to career advising, the career advisor’s role in achieving student success, the financial supports available to early childhood educators, and other programs and services provided by IEECE to the early childhood workforce of Palm Beach County.
